Discharge is not recovery
A patient sent home after surgery is stable, not well. What follows — keeping a wound clean, managing pain sensibly, getting someone moving at the right pace, watching for the complications the discharge summary warns about — is the part families are expected to manage alone, usually with no training and while working.
Bring the discharge summary to the first call
It is the single most useful document in the conversation. It tells us the procedure, the medication schedule, the follow-up dates and the specific things to watch for — and therefore whether the case needs an attendant, an ANM, or a more qualified nurse.
Knowing when to escalate
Most of the value in trained post-surgical care is knowing which changes are normal and which mean the patient should be seen today. That judgement is the reason to have someone qualified in the house during the first weeks.
